Professor of English Dr. Sun Hong is a native of Beijing . He graduated from Beijing No. 4 High School in 1968. He obtained his B.A. (English Language and Literature, 1981) from Xi'an Foreign Languages University, both his M.A. (Humanities, 1988) and Ph. D. (Educational Administration, 1990) from Indiana State University , and his second Ph. D. (Comparative Literature, 1995) from Washington University . In his academic pursuit, Dr. Sun Hong has won various awards and honors, including Excellent Teacher Award, conferred by Northwest University in the academic years of 1985-86, 1991-92, 1996-97, 1998-99, Student Government Association Award, conferred by Indiana State University in 1990, J. Fred Swalls Award in Educational Administration, conferred by Indiana State University in 1990, Distinguished Master's Thesis Award, conferred by Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools, U. S. A., in 1990, Edgar L. Morphet Research Award in Education, conferred by Indiana State University in 1990, Excellent Academic Achievement Award, conferred by Shaanxi Educational Commission in 1997, Excellent Academic Achievement Award, conferred by Shaanxi Educational Commission in 1999, The Fifth Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, conferred by the Government of Shaanxi Province in 1998, The Sixth Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, conferred by the Government of Shaanxi Province in 2001. Dr. Sun Hong 's fields include English Literature, American Literature, and Comparative Literature. In recent years he has published 36 volumes of academic works and 34 essays in China and abroad. He is the author of A Comparative Study of the Chinese and American Educational Systems (1993), Myth and Reality in the Rural and Urban Worlds: A Survey of the Literary Landscape in American and Chinese Regional Literatures (1997), An Encyclopedia of World Poetics (1999). His essays include “Ezra Pound and the Classical Canon of Confucianism” in Foreign Literature Review (Vol. 50, No. 2, 1999), “Shakespeare and the Bible: Their Ties Seen through Measure for Measure ” in the Journal of Northwest University (Vol. 60, No. 1, 2001), “The Spirit of Place in American Literature” in Foreign Literature Review (Vol. 60, No. 4, 2001), and “ My ántonia and Willa Cather's Ecological Concern ” in Foreign Literature Review (Vol. 73, No. 1, 2005). In 2003 Michigan University Press published his essay, “Pound's Quest for Confucian Ideals: The Chinese History Cantos,” along with nine other Pound scholars' recent academic works in a volume entitled Ezra Pound and China . In 2005, Dr. Sun Hong has completed his translation of The Cambridge History of American Literature ( Vol. 7). This 1.1 million-word volume, published by the Central Compilation and Translation Press, is called a “Century's Project.” Cambridge University Press first published its History of American Literature in 1917 and decided to rewrite the History of American Literature every new century. With the coming of the 21 st century, Cambridge University Press has started to publish this century's History of American Literature . Vol. 7 is one of the first volumes out and the longest one of the eight volumes of the giant work . The publication of the translation of The Cambridge History of American Literature (Vol. VII) has been well received by the press.
